Planning a BarTender Server Migration and Upgrade – BarTender Instructions Article
Target Audience: Advanced User, IT Manager, Basic User
Article #: 13589
Summary
This Instruction Article explains how to prepare for a migration and upgrade of BarTender from an existing server to a new one. This option allows almost no disruption to production and can be done when needing to decommission the existing server or start over with a fresh server instance.
Preparation
- Prepare a new server or VM with the latest Windows OS and SQL Server (optional) according to specifications.
- Download the latest BarTender Suite installation package onto the new server.
- Obtain administrative access for both servers.
Instructions
Review the steps below to plan and schedule the migration.
- Install BarTender Suite on the new server.
- Back up the existing BarTender database on the current server.
- Restore the BarTender database on the new server.
- When activating the license, use the same Product Key Code. Use the new server as the server name. Check ‘Use Provisional Activation’. This will allow parallel operation of both servers using the same license.
- Run the System Database Wizard in the Administration Console on the new server. Connect to the new server using the same database credentials. BarTender will update the database schema if needed.
- Upgrade at least one Designer to the latest version of BarTender. This version must be the same or lower than the server version of BarTender.
- Set-up and validation:
- Use Designer to review and validate Librarian labels.
- Set up workflow and security.
- Migrate all Windows fonts and printers to the new server.
- Re-license all Designers on the new server.
- After validation, deactivate the license on the original server. The provisional license will become permanent.
