TEKLYNX Perpetual License Cannot Access Offline Server – TEKLYNX Problem

Target Audience: Advanced User, IT Manager
Article #: 13260

Summary

A user changes their license from a subscription-based version to a perpetual license. Afterwards, when they try to launch the software, they receive a message stating that the license needs access to the internet. This is despite the fact that the workstation itself has a functioning internet connection. The reason for this is because the perpetual license cannot access an offline server. In this case, “offline” means that the user’s server is behind a firewall and not connected to the internet, rather than being down due to technical issues. The workstation needs to be able to connect to the server with the license information in order to validate the license and launch. For this reason, the user can still connect to the server running TEKLYNX software from within the local network that hosts the server. Fortunately, there are a pair of workarounds.

Explanation

TEKLYNX offers two types of licenses: a perpetual license and a subscription-based version. The perpetual license is purchased once and never has to be renewed, while the subscription is renewed on an annual basis. As mentioned above, in addition to how the license is renewed, the other major difference is the ability to access remote servers behind a firewall.

A subscription-based license is set up to connect to the server from outside the internal network via a connection to TEKLYNX’s cloud server. The connection from the subscriber’s server to TEKLYNX’s server through the subscriber’s firewall is configured during setup.

Solution

While using a subscription-based license is the easiest method for being able to remotely connect to the servers with the licenses for TEKLYNX software, it is not always the best method to meet the user’s requirements. There are two methods to allow a user to remotely connect a server behind a firewall:

METHOD 1: If security is the primary concern, the IT department can allow the server access while restricting the usage.

  • Open ports 80 and 443
  • Whitelist only two IP addresses: 79.98.18.61 and 217.167.48.8. These are the addresses for TEKLYNX’s primary and backup activation servers.

METHOD 2: Exchange the digital license for a physical USB key. This will allow the software to launch on the workstation even though it cannot connect to the server. EBI can assist you with this process.
