In-Place Software Upgrade – BarTender Instruction Article

Summary

Seagull Software regularly releases updates to the BarTender software suite. At the time of this article, the latest release is BarTender 12.1. This Reference Article provides a guideline to upgrade BarTender software to a newer release (within the same version).

Preparation

  • Download latest executable for upgrade
  • Secure software license activation key (from EBI: http://efficientbi.com/contact)
  • Obtain test computer or VM (recommended but optional)

Instructions

Simply installing the new version over the existing version is risky and not a recommended procedure.  In this situation we recommend the following steps:

  1. Create a test server (similar/identical to current server).
  2. Backup data from current server and restore it on the test server.
  3. Make sure that test server is running normally.
  4. Perform upgrade to the latest release and document all the steps. This will come in handy if you need to perform IQ.
  5. Test the functionality of the new version. The amount of testing required will depend on an individual company’s SOPs. Document all the tests.
  6. Review all label layouts, fonts, and graphics. These may change during a software update.
  7. After successful tests, repeat steps 2,4 and 5 on current production server.
  8. Perform the same tests done in step 5 and step 6.
