Create a GS1-128 Barcode in LABEL MATRIX – Instructions

Originally known as UCC/EAN-128 barcodes, GS1-128 was developed to provide a global standard for exchanging data between different companies regardless of nation or location. This article explains how to create a GS1-128 barcode using LABEL MATRIX.


You will need:

  • LABEL MATRIX PowerPro v2021 or later.
  • Understand barcode requirements including what data will need to be encoded, GS1 number, serial number, expiration date and etc.
  • Determination on where the data for the barcode will originate, such as from keyboard input, a list, a databased, fixed data or the like.


  1. Open LABEL MATRIX and specify destination printer as well as the correct label size.
  2. Select the Barcode icon on the column on the left.
  3. Set the Origin in the Data tab to Combination.
  4. Click on the Use Wizard button.
  1. Then, select Next In the Combination Wizard window.
  1. Select the Application Identifier (usually 00, 01, or 02) for the initial data segment.
  1. Identify the data source for the initial data segment.
  1. Define the field name and characteristics.
  1. Define more data characteristics.
  1. Select Next to go back to the main Combination Wizard screen and select/define additional data segments with the Add Another AI button.
  1. Once all needed segments (Application Identifiers) have been added, select Next.
  1. Review the formula in the Expression window.
  1. Click on the Place button when you return to the Bar Code Properties window.
  1. Place the label in the desired position on the label.

Tested using LABEL MATRIX v2021 on Windows 11.
