Change Maximum Characters Length of Item Field – BACTRACK Instructions

Summary

BACKTRACK allows users to customize the length for each data field. If a field’s data is longer than allowed, it will cause an error. Changing the limit to accommodate the field’s length avoids that error. This article will guide you through the steps needed to change the maximum characters length of an Items field in BACKTRACK.

Preparation

You will need to have administrative rights in order to edit item fields in BACKTRACK.

Instructions

  1. Open BACKTRACK
  2. In the Main Menu, select the Database Maintenance option.
  1. Click on Administrative Functions.
  1. Click on Maintain Application.
  1. Select the application to be changed. (BACTRACK2 for these instructions).
  1. Click on Advance Edit.
  1. Click on Edit Item Structure.
  1. On the left side of the screen, scroll down to the item field you are looking to edit. For this demonstration, it is LR2000.
  1. On the right side of the screen, select the property that you wish to change. In this case, it is Length. Change the to the desired number of characters. In the image below, “20” has been changed to a maximum length of 30 characters.
  1. Click OK at the bottom of the screen to save changes.
  1. Click the Main Menu tab at the top of the screen.
  1. Test BACKTRACK to ensure that it works as desired.

Additional Comments

A larger length than is needed can be set for the field. If the new value exceeds available area in the text box, remember to edit the size of the in the Customize Add/Modify Item screen.
